Medical Emergency Policy
Emergency Procedures
If a medical emergency occurs in your classroom or work area, here are some general procedures to follow:
- If someone loses consciousness (even if they regain it) encourage him/her to remain lying where s/he fell. Do not attempt to move or adjust the position of anyone who has fallen, particularly if s/he has stricken his/her head when falling. (Paramedics are concerned about spinal injuries if someone falls with a head injury, even from just a standing position.)
- Immediately use the phone in your room to call 911. That will connect you to campus security, which will relay your message to the appropriate medic unit.
- If there is no phone in your room, send two students up to the Art Office, on the 5th floor, Room 505 (it is better if the teacher stays in the room with the injured/afflicted person). Have them tell an office staff member (ask for Janice or Joyce) to call 911 if you could not do so.
- Ask Janice, Joyce, or the office staff to inform the School Director.
- Ask two students to go down to the School parking lot next the ceramics classrooms (1st floor) and two students to go up to the entrance on the Avenue of the Arts (5th floor, or ask Dave Camberg to be on alert) to direct paramedics to the site of the emergency (Campus security may also meet the medics at an entrance to campus and lead them in).
- Campus security will arrive to assist, will ask questions and take a case report.
- Be sure that Public Safety and the Director get the names of any persons who saw the collapse, accident, or incident that occurred.
- Remain calm, reassuring.
- If you are uncertain as to whether or not medical assistance is necessary, please alert the office and Director immediately. Seemingly small incidents can end up being potentially serious.
