Policies
Server Policy
- The server is to be used for files relevant to the indicated class.
- At no time is server storage guaranteed, so it is imperative that students make their own backups. We are not responsible for class or student data, as our drives or systems could fail at any time. We do not back up student work from servers because of the cost of extra storage devices and staff time. These sharepoints are courtesies (with exception to class websites).
- These sharepoints are temporary storage (except web classes). Our policy is to delete files at the end of each semester (except for web classes), and we reserve the right to remove harmful data at any time.
- Classes on the "design.sdsu.edu" domain are indicated as having a web component. These classes are to use this space for WEB-BASED files only. We reserve the right to request students and faculty to remove native file formats (like .psd, .ai, .indd, .fla, .dir, .tif, etc.) if the server space starts to run low.
- Music files are prohibited with exception to multimedia-based courses. Please let your students know that they can lose audio-related filetypes at any time without warning if they keep them on the server for classes not classified as multimedia.
- You can transfer files via AFP (Apple File Protocol) or FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP should take you straight to your class folder when connecting. AFP will show a few sharepoints from which to choose. If your teacher has more than one section of a given course, you will select the time-based share (i.e. "9AM"), otherwise you will connect to the share with either your instructor' name or course number listed. If you select the wrong sharepoint in AFP, you will see multiple other folders, but you will not have access to them.
- If you want a tutorial on using FTP on a PC, see the Filezilla tutorial on this website. Filezilla is a freeware Windows program available at http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ for download. You can also configure Dreamweaver as your FTP client if you are designing webpages.
- If you are transferring files via FTP and experience problems connecting, try changing your FTP client's preferences for "passive" mode.
Problems?
Please email us at lcotnoir@mail.sdsu.edu for server problems. Please list your user name, password, connection method (AFP or FTP), and your specific problem in the email.
